11:45-12:45 Kat Spears' "Writing 'Bad' Characters" Location: Library
11:45-12:45 Andrew Blossom's "Serious Horror" Location: Room 319
- Although often looked down upon, the horror genre has a place in fiction writing. This session will look at incorporating elements of the terrifying, otherworldly and supernatural into fiction, using brief examples from famous horror tales and films.
1:00-2:00 Jon Sealy's "Trouble and Resolution: The Architecture of the Novel" Location: Library
1:00-2:00 Erica Orloff's "Wizards and Magicians and Halflings, Oh My!" Location: Room 304
- In this workshop, Erica Orloff (who writes middle-grade fantasy as Erica Kirov) will share insights on worldbuilding and character creation in the fantasy and paranormal genres. In worlds that are limitless, how can you rein in your story so that you as writer (and in turn, our readers) don't lose your way? Learn how to keep an "inconvenient idea" journal, and access your imagination!
2:00-3:00 Lunch-- We will have pizza available to purchase and complimentary lunch for the authors in our "green room" (If you have dietary restrictions/requirements/allergies, PLEASE let Cindy Cunningham know!-- [email protected])
3:00-4:00 Harrison Fletcher's " 'Hermit Crabs' and Other Thievery" Location: Library
- With this playful (and powerful) literary form we will discover how to transform recipes, alphabets, obituaries and to-do-lists into compelling essays, short stories and even novels. After this hands-on workshop you may not look at your writing the same way again.
- The web -- and downsizing at newspapers and TV stations -- has opened up all kinds of opportunities for young writers to 'cover' their communities online with revelatory reporting that combines narrative writing with a trove of public data that's out there for the taking. Watchdog journalism is a dying art that is making a comeback in the online world. Requisite skills: curiosity, a love of the written word and perseverance. We'll talk about what's on the horizon in journalism.
- In this course we will examine works of poetry and creative nonfiction in order to open up these genres to hybrid works. We will discuss features that are shared by the genres, how to bend the rules, and look at some examples before doing an exercise."
